Tonight was meant to be a Hawaiian Disco arranged by Fay but because of her poor dad we decided to make her cards instead. But of course we had to tell the girls why the disco wasn't happening. How to explain stuff to 5 year olds without worrying them. We needn't have worried. We told them about Fay and they all had a collective awww. Then we had a little talk about dying and had they had anyone close to them die? We had the normal granny and grandad, great granny who was very old. Then the hamster found dead in the cage. Then the goldfish who was floating onto the bowl and was still floating the next morning. Then they asked where people go when they die...How do they get up there? Do they fly? Then... "Well It's a good job people do die otherwise we wouldn't have enough houses to live in" (very matter of fact child)
They all had masses of questions. I left Marie to it and started the cards.
The cards were rather sweet. They all wrote something nice like 'we love you' and 'Hope you feel better soon' But H bless her, wrote 'Sorry your dad died hope you are happy soon' It's true I guess.
It's all so black and white to the 5 year old. Yet they are loving and caring. Some weeks both me and Marie think.. Oh heck we got Rainbows tonight, frankly we could do without it. But they are so special and rewarding. They make us laugh and amaze us. It's a good job this guiding business.
